Top Bundesliga Moments of 2020-21

Great moments with the Derbystar ball.

In partnership with the good people of Bundesliga, we reflect on a white hot 2020-21 season flooded with spectacular moments with the Bundesliga Derbystar ball. Robert Lewangoalskidowski has already made his mark with 19 goals halfway through the season while partner in crime, Thomas Mueller, has notched a respectable 8 assists so far.

Despite an erratic season, Borussia Dortmund has shown their technical talents on the ball with 87.6% of successful passes made from open play, the highest in the league. From goal gluts to fancy footwork, here are our best moments of the season so far.

Four-midable Lewandowski

There is no stopping Lewandowski. The goal machine is one of the big reasons for Bayern’s dominance in the league and this effortless performance in a humdinger of a match is representative of his predatory abilities. He made light work of his finishes, two simple tap-ins sandwiched by a deceptively challenging shot from outside the box.

He sealed the win for Bayern Munich in injury time with a coolly taken penalty.

That Gregor Kobel penalty save

If hit right, that Derbystar ball can really let fly. That was the prospect Kobel faced when facing this penalty. He guessed right and got a touch on the ball, forcing it to ricochet against the bar in dramatic fashion.

Guendouzi’s curler

The talented Arsenal loanee is having a bit of a resurgence in Germany with Hertha Berlin. He isn’t known to be a great goal scorer but he proved to be a scorer of a great goal in this match against Borussia Mönchengladbach. His first goal in 2 years saw him receive the ball just outside the box before whipping in a first time shot that left ‘keeper Tobias Sippel rooted to his spot.

Amiri’s super cool finish

Excellent movement, a lovely chipped pass and a cheeky finish – all ingredients for one of the best goals to be scored during this 20/21 season. Leverkusen’s Amiri exchanges passes with Wirtz who chips a ball over the Frankfurt defence for Amiri who ghosts into the box. Amiri controls the ball cleverly but looks to have faced the wrong way, with ‘keeper Kevin Trapp blocking his angle to goal.

All of that isn’t a problem as Amiri calmly and cheekily backheels the ball, catching Trapp off guard with a sweet finish that goes under him.

Lazaro’s Scorpion Kick

Borussia Mönchengladbach were already two goals down in a tough match against Bayer 04 Leverkusen but Valentino Lazaro scored his team’s consolation goal in the most beautiful fashion. He joins Olivier Giroud, Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Henrikh Mkhitaryan in scoring in such iconic fashion – through the Scorpion Kick. Another contender for best goal of the season.
