Nike brings the heat with their 2020 designs.
After the massive success of the World Cup 2018 kits, Nike has released another series that is straight up flames. While we’re curious why Nike hasn’t released their European kits in anticipation of Euro 2020, it seems that the swoosh has its eyes on the summer Olympics too.
Our first peek of their new range are of the Nigerian, South Korean and American jerseys bodes well for the summer tournaments and the next generation of Nike kit designs.
Nigeria
Nike never disappoints with the Super Eagles. 2018’s runaway success is followed up by another brilliant design. The home kit is inspired by traditional Nigerian agbada robes – highly symbolic of Nigerian heritage with nods to nobility and family. A must have for the avid kit collector.
The away kit is more low-key but still is oozing with style. It’s inspired by Onaism, a traditional artistic movement central to Nigerian design and craft represented in the trims. An eagle feather aesthetic, creatively distorted, continuously repeats in ascending size to create a visual impact.
The broader Naija collection will feature an extensive array of Super Eagles apparel including a poncho, vest, dress and more.
South Korea
Equally fashionable, the South Korean kits would look just at home on the pitch as it will on the streets of Gangnam. Their kits get a massive redesign with nods to their vibrant culture.
The home kit is all about the Hallyu (the Korean wave) which is features a wavy pattern comprised of the trigrams from the national flag. Vibrant pink on the upper body transitions into the new red of the federation through the torso and the shorts. The crest on the 2020 kits is also new, featuring a geometrical white tiger. The collar and sleeve trim are black with black side stripes that tonally read “Daehan Minguk” in Korean characters and “Korea” in English.
The white tiger mascot is the away kit’s biggest inspiration as the white top and socks are covered in tiger stripes. A sacred creature believed to be a guardian animal in Korean mythology, the white tiger symbolizes courage and power. Throw in some gold trims and you’ve got a touch of class on this sweet kit.
USA
The States are keeping it clean for this new iteration of their jersey. The home kit is predominantly white but it’s the small details which give it its lustre. The subtle wavy pattern gives it a more premium look while the red and blue sleeve tips help make the jersey pop.
The away kit is a deep obsidian with pops of brighter blue and red accents. The abstract pattern on the jersey was hand drawn by Nike’s design team and pulls from the infiltration of camo-esque elements in high fashion.
And notice the classic Nike Futura logo on the USA kits? You won’t be finding it on any other nation’s tops.
