The ladies will be putting on some killer jerseys.
I find it quite encouraging that attention on the women’s game has increased within the last 2 years. People forget that women enjoy watching and playing the game too but they don’t enjoy the same level of acceptance within the community.
Even if they turn pro, the scene is too small for them to demand the same level of wages that their male counterparts receive. Which is why I was really please to hear that the likes of adidas and Nikesought to raise their commitments to the ladies this coming World Cup.
A big part of that comes in a form of hype for new tournament jerseys. Many will be wearing original or improved designs made just for the women’s team. Below, we list our favourite jerseys you can expect to see at the Women’s World Cup in France.
France
Starting off with my personal favourite and the home nation. The French jerseys are just stunning. As compared to the men’s jerseys, they decided on a darker shade of blue on the home jersey. What takes the cake is the rose gold detailing on the Nike and French Federation – pure class.
I’m a big fan of the away jersey too , with blue hexagonal prints peppering the white top. The pattern references both the country’s informal nickname (l’hexagone) and the dotted styles of French fashion.
South Korea Away
South Korea’s jerseys remain unchanged from the men’s edition but it’s not so bad considering how much I like the away jersey. It’s clean, modern and also a little underrated.
Let’s hope the girls can produce a giant killing the way the men’s team did in Russia last year.
Nigeria
Another case of “if ain’t broke…”. The Super Eagles’ jersey were the stars of the Russia World Cup 2018. Now it’s time for the women’s team (the Super Falcons) to match the hype of the jerseys after the men flattered to deceive in the tournament.
The home jersey is a modern classic with its eagle wing-inspired black-and-white sleeve and green torso, supercharged by the abstract feather pattern. The clean cut away jersey is also a bit of an underrated gem featuring a deep green colour for the top and shorts.
Germany Home
Despite their awful showing in Russia, I felt that the men’s home jersey was a beauty. adidas has given the same design a little bit more life with a subtle retweak of the chest graphic and an addition of the colours of the German flag.
Norway Home
The gradient/ombre colourway hasn’t always worked out for Nike this season. See: Tottenham’s 2018/19 jerseys.
However, Norway’s is a thing of beauty. Combining the team’s trademark colors of red and blue, the new home jersey features a pattern borrowed from traditional Norwegian ski sweaters.
Fun fact: Norwegian football benefits from a culture of “sterkere sammen” (stronger together), which includes equal pay for male and female internationals. Excellent stuff, Norwegians.
China Away
I don’t usually like stereotypical “dragon” prints on anything “oriental” inspired but the design on this jersey is quite tastefully done. It’s actually a phoenix that makes an appearance, conveying femininity and virtue.
Crimson pops on the sleeve enliven the gray tonal body, and a second Phoenix print sits within the kit as a symbol of inner pride.
Sweden Home
adidas has been very big on the pixelated design this year and it is supremely evident on the Swedish jersey. It’s definitely a head turner and sets it apart from the men’s edition.
England Away
The most elegant of all the jerseys today. The England away jerseys form the canvas to display specific flora native to the counties and regions of England.
“The common poppy, primrose, rosebay willow herb, wood anemone, spring gentian, Nottingham catchfly and traditional rose intermingle with the hop to form a floral pattern that represents the entire country,” explains Cassie Looker, Nike Women’s Football Apparel Lead.
Wow, just wow.
Netherlands Home
The reigning European champions are looking to make a stamp on the World stage and look good while they’re at it.
The head-to-toe orange home shirt, shorts and socks are adorned with an ornamental graphic inspired by the country’s famed tulip. Simple, but still very beautiful.
