Nike and Atletico are bringing 90s chic to their third kit.
The 90s were an odd time for Atletico Madrid. From flirting with relegation, the closure of their youth acaemy to La Liga and Copa Del Rey winners, Atletico were never far from drama under the leadership of controversial club president, Jesus Gil.
Today, Atletico are a well-run machine and to pay tribute to their foundational years of the 90s, Nike has produced this gem of a jersey for the Madrid based club.
“Everybody knows about the moments of success for our club during that era,” says midfielder Saúl Ñiguez. “The fans will enjoy this colour being brought back. It’s nice to see how the design gives it that 90s feel.”
A little white washing never hurt anyone but at least the kits look like absolute class. We see the return of the squared collars that first appeared on the Chelsea third kits with seven stars (from Madrid’s coat of arms) making an appearance across the neckline. It’s all about the jacquard prints with Nike’s third kits and we see the words “Atleti” subtly printed across the jersey.
And who can resist that classic Nike “Futura” logo? The whole Atletico Madrid third kit oozes class. Even for a concept that white washes a turbulent history.
